I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert"&lt;/i&gt; (Isaiah 43:19, KJV).&amp;nbsp; Unfortunately, every time I read this verse, I'm NOT reminded of God's beautiful promise to Israel.&amp;nbsp; This is the verse that I've heard many people use to justify moving outside of God's Word in some "move of the Spirit."&amp;nbsp; When questioned about the validity of their actions, they invariably point to this chapter and verse to explain their behavior.&amp;nbsp; In essence, their explanation goes something like this, "Look, I know that what I'm doing (or saying or teaching or promoting) is not necessarily mentioned in the Bible, but look - "God's doing a NEW THING!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CGXZLEX2Vcs/Tn3WXSaXUPI/AAAAAAAAAD0/diNT8xT1yvo/s1600/confusing_road_signs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CGXZLEX2Vcs/Tn3WXSaXUPI/AAAAAAAAAD0/diNT8xT1yvo/s320/confusing_road_signs.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first, and most obvious, problem with this reasoning is that it is using a scripture completely out of context!&amp;nbsp; This promise from the Lord was not intended to become our&amp;nbsp; license (or Israel's) to move outside of scriptural boundaries and safeguards.&amp;nbsp; I find it hard to believe that God would want His promise to ancient Israel to become the justification for "new" teaching, behavior or practice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Usually, those who are seeking some "new move of the Spirit," want to go outside of what they perceive as stale church worship or dead Christian practice. Their belief is that the church (the local body or overall) is in need of some change.&amp;nbsp; I've heard the reasoning cloaked in phrases like "Spirit-led," "new move," and "greater revelation."&amp;nbsp; (The ultimate trump card that is often played when questioned by pastoral leadership is: "God told me so.") But this verse from Isaiah's prophecy was never intended to justify actions without accountability - from Scripture or from spiritual leadership!&amp;nbsp; Using this verse as a license for scripturally unsanctioned behavior is like telling the policeman that you're not "under the law" anymore, so you don't have to obey the speed limits.&amp;nbsp; Absurd!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've been accused of "grieving" and "quenching" the Spirit.&amp;nbsp; I've heard the justification that "wild fire is better than no fire." Of course, the careless disregard for others (especially those who are young in the Lord) is dismissed because of the greater right to exercise this new liberty in the Lord.&amp;nbsp; The lack of humility, kindness, gentleness and compassion are not even considered.&amp;nbsp; It never registers that this "lack of" reveals a prevailing immaturity and a decidedly unspiritual attitude.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is the heart of the problem: most of the people that I have heard use this passage as their reasoning are not under any spiritual leadership. They disdain the church and are not connected in any significant relational way - except with those who share and affirm their views. Most arrogantly assume that they are "above correction" and that their new (and greater) revelation sets them apart from any need for leadership or guidance.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The avoidance of honest discourse isn't surprising when people feel that they are under some "mandate" from God.&amp;nbsp; But that doesn't give us the "right" to do an "end run" around the leadership of the local church!&amp;nbsp; This was at the heart of many of the problems in the Corinthian church, and as we read Paul's rebukes we are reminded of the same tendencies in the modern church.&amp;nbsp; Spiritual leadership is a gift to the church and Scripture is replete with examples of submitting to godly leadership and not causing strife or division within the body. &lt;i&gt;"Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit"&lt;/i&gt; (Hebrews 13:17, NLT).&amp;nbsp; No one is above the guidelines, structure, correction and reproof that Scripture provides - through the Bible - and through pastoral leadership.&amp;nbsp; And there is no greater revelation than God's Word!&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God's Word is given as our rule and it creates boundaries that certainly limit our "liberties."&amp;nbsp; &lt;i&gt;"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works"&lt;/i&gt; (2 Timothy 3:16-17, KJV).&amp;nbsp; Using one scripture, pulled out of context, to justify what we may "feel" is right, must not become our reasoning for unscriptural behavior or practice. Who will go for us?” &lt;/i&gt;(Isaiah 6:8a)&amp;nbsp; Did you catch Isaiah's eager reply? &lt;i&gt;“Here I am. Send me”&lt;/i&gt; (Isa. 6:8b).&amp;nbsp; No deliberation or weighing the pros and cons or considering the cost. "Here I am. Send me."&amp;nbsp; He didn't even know what God was going to tell the people!&amp;nbsp; In fact, as you read verses 9 and 10, you get the very real sense that this was not going to be a very uplifting or gratifying experience for Isaiah.&amp;nbsp; That may be why he asks, &lt;i&gt;“Lord, how long will this go on?”&lt;/i&gt; (v. 11).&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SG32LuBFQjY/Tmt8sSdjcmI/AAAAAAAAADw/JZrFUcJ739I/s1600/prophet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SG32LuBFQjY/Tmt8sSdjcmI/AAAAAAAAADw/JZrFUcJ739I/s320/prophet.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;When I felt that God was calling me into the ministry, I ran the other way (NOT in a wild prodigal son kind of way - just far enough to get away from that persistent Voice).&amp;nbsp; I thought it might just be some pentecostal emotionalism (not how I phrased it way back when).&amp;nbsp; I made excuses for how unqualified I was - "No member of my family had ever been in the ministry!"&amp;nbsp; (Actually, most of my extended family wasn't even saved.) But God persisted in His call.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When God put His finger on my heart one Sunday night in church, I knew the running was over, there wasn't a doubt about Who was calling, and all of my "reasonable" excuses had failed.&amp;nbsp; That night,&amp;nbsp; I surrendered and said, "Yes, to the call that You have on my life."&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wish I could say that everyone affirmed the call and was excited for me, but that's just not true. My girlfriend at the time, a nice Baptist girl (who shall remain nameless), broke up with me and dropped me like a whacked-out radioactive hot potato.&amp;nbsp; By the way, that was the first (and last) time that she ever went to church with me.&amp;nbsp; She actually rode home with my mom instead of me that night!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also wish that I could say I was totally jazzed about pursuing a "lucrative" future in ministry (NOT what I had in mind as a 17 year old millionaire to be and my mom and dad were very worried that I would be a poor, penniless preacher).&amp;nbsp; In fact, over the next couple of months, I still tried to reason away this notion of serving God in the ministry.&amp;nbsp; I tried to figure a way out, but now, over 28 years later, I can tell you that I'm glad that I replied with that reluctant "yes."&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I can't imagine what my life would have been like outside of the ministry.&amp;nbsp; (I know that we're not able to see the "might have beens" or "what ifs" in our lives.&amp;nbsp; Maybe in heaven...)&amp;nbsp; Like Isaiah, and so many of the other prophets, God has taken me to some amazing places and I've met some wonderful (and not so wonderful) people (you know who you are! heh).&amp;nbsp; I am certainly not rich in any material way, but God has NEVER failed to provide our every need.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am privileged to continue to serve Him in this preaching and teaching ministry.&amp;nbsp; I've made mistakes and I've failed at times in the mission. (Too numerable to recount and that's REALLY not a road that I want to take, but my regrets seem to travel with me - even more so, as I realize how careless and arrogant I was as a young minister.&amp;nbsp; "Grace, Lord, please!&amp;nbsp; For myself, but also for those who were part of my life at those times.")&amp;nbsp; I've probably been more like Jonah than Isaiah, but God has always been faithful.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In looking back over these thoughts, I've used the "I" word a lot in  this blog, but since it's a personal narrative, I (Ugh, there it is  again!) believe that I'm (yikes!) allowed to. The bottom line?&amp;nbsp; Isaiah's book may have his name on it, but it is really God's story. Like Isaiah, these reflections and my story, are really not about me, but about God using a less-than-perfect vessel to get His word out.&amp;nbsp; My life and ministry is about His wonderful and amazing grace, His power and His steadfast love and faithfulness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It has been a privilege to have been a part of what God is doing in people's lives. I'm humbled that God would call someone like me to do something for Him.&amp;nbsp; At almost 50 years of age, I find myself needing to respond to Him again, "Here I am. Check out how Paul addresses this truth:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Your bodies are members of Christ Himself ... Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body"&lt;/b&gt; (1 Corinthians 6:19).&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3-rUVjodte0/TilwophwsZI/AAAAAAAAADs/EROlnHRKIMg/s1600/temple_1_dedication.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="215" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3-rUVjodte0/TilwophwsZI/AAAAAAAAADs/EROlnHRKIMg/s320/temple_1_dedication.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;Do you remember when Jesus "cleansed" the temple (found in all four of the Gospels)?&amp;nbsp; I wonder  how they could have ever let it get into that condition.&amp;nbsp; I believe that  it was because they just got careless.&amp;nbsp; Perhaps they just reasoned that this is what all the other temples did in that culture.&amp;nbsp; But it's clear that what began on the outside of  the temple, eventually made it's way into the temple courts. The lesson for you and me?&amp;nbsp; We must be vigilant about what goes on in this place.&amp;nbsp; That means being careful with what we watch, what we read, or what we listen to.&amp;nbsp; The world's standards aren't good enough for you and me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let me make this personal today: I must not be careless with this temple where a holy God lives. When I defile the temple or degrade it in any way, I should not be surprised that I suffer the consequences.&amp;nbsp; This is what Solomon anticipates (and God predicts). And we've all felt the effects of our carelessness.&amp;nbsp; The good news? It's found in God's response to Solomon's prayer....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-ESV-11337"&gt;12&lt;/sup&gt;Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: "I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice. &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-ESV-11338"&gt;13&lt;/sup&gt;  When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the  locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-ESV-11339"&gt;14&lt;/sup&gt;if my people who are called by my name  humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked  ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal  their land. &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-ESV-11340"&gt;15&lt;/sup&gt; Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-ESV-11341"&gt;16&lt;/sup&gt;  For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be  there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time &lt;/b&gt;(2 Chronicles 7:12-16)&lt;b&gt;."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line: If I have dedicated myself to God, then I am not my own.&amp;nbsp;If I have defiled the temple, I need to confess my sin and ask Jesus to forgive and cleanse me (1 John 1:9). (It is implied that the angel directed him to take the journey to Sinai.)&amp;nbsp; Perhaps Elijah believed that he would be safe from the machinations of evil Jezebel by hiding in "the mountain of God".... &amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Back to God's repeated question.&amp;nbsp; Did you notice that Elijah's answers were exactly the same?&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span style="color: black;"&gt;"I have zealously served the L&lt;span class="sc"&gt;ord&lt;/span&gt; God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too" (vv. 10 &amp;amp; 13).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp; Did he think that God had not heard or understood the first time?&amp;nbsp; Doesn't it stand to reason that if God asks you a question twice, it is probably because you didn't give the right answer the first time?&amp;nbsp; So, what is God asking Elijah?&amp;nbsp; Think about it - God's question is about motivation.&amp;nbsp; "WHY are you here?"&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;God then commands Elijah to come out to the mouth of the cave and stand before Him.&amp;nbsp; It is there that God reveals Himself in a gentle whisper. After the drama of wind, earthquake and fire...God whispers.&amp;nbsp; Is there a lesson here for you and me?&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;God's answer to Elijah's response is the key.&amp;nbsp; Allow me to paraphrase:&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;i&gt;"Listen for my voice in the midst of all the drama and the storm of your emotions.&amp;nbsp; Elijah, you are not alone. You're not done yet because I'm not done with you.&amp;nbsp; No matter what you feel like, I still have a mission for you. I will continue to direct you and now I will provide a protege to learn from you."&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Are those words that you need to hear today?&amp;nbsp; Are you exhausted and on the run?&amp;nbsp; Do you feel as if you are all alone?&amp;nbsp; Are you despairing that all you've done has not made a difference?&amp;nbsp; Listen again for God's gentle whisper - the reminder of His presence in your crises.&amp;nbsp; Let go of your expectations.&amp;nbsp; Listen for the assurance that He is still in control and that His plan for your life can't be thwarted by evil men.&amp;nbsp; Look for evidence of God's continued work in your life (just think about His miraculous provision for Elijah's journey). So why is God so emphatic?&amp;nbsp; I believe that our tendency is to forget where we came from because we are so busy running from our past.&amp;nbsp; Another reason may have to do with my forward momentum.&amp;nbsp; I can have serious tunnel vision in my pursuit of plans and goals (and there are many times that others suffer because of it).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our past is a touchstone of God's grace and goodness. I love to sing of His redemptive work!&amp;nbsp; In the rush of my life and ministry, I need a continual reminder of what God has done for me. We must remember that His work in our lives becomes the benchmark for how we are supposed to treat other people. (Check out Jesus' instruction in Luke 10:25-27 for a great illustration of this!)&amp;nbsp; We must not forget that WE are part of His redemptive work in the lives of others!&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God's admonition to Israel applies to each of us.&amp;nbsp; Why not take a little time today to reflect on God's great "grace" work in your life?&amp;nbsp; Spend a few minutes in reflection and consider how He has delivered you from slavery into the promised land of freedom.&amp;nbsp; How does His work in your life affect how you treat others today? This much I know: in my worst conversational moments...the times that I have blurted, blabbed or bloviated, I was often speaking out of pettiness, frustration, jealousy, moodiness, or in anger.&amp;nbsp; Jesus says that this what I had stored up in the treasury of my heart!&amp;nbsp; (Now, I've justified it at times by saying that in my formative years I was encouraged to speak my mind.&amp;nbsp; The truth is that this has gotten me more into trouble than it has ever gotten me out of trouble. Can you relate?)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, how do we store "good things" in our heart?&amp;nbsp; Paul gave the Philippians this instruction:&amp;nbsp; "&lt;i&gt;...whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is  pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent  or praiseworthy—think about such things&lt;/i&gt;" (Philippians 4:8, &lt;span style="font-size: x-small;"&gt;NIV&lt;/span&gt;).&amp;nbsp; What we dwell on - what we think about - is stored away in the treasury of our heart.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We "invest" (or is it "ingest") a lot of things into our heart.&amp;nbsp; I know that it's mixing a metaphor, but the progression goes something like this: Sow a thought. Reap an action. Sow an action. Reap a habit. Sow a habit. Reap a destiny.&amp;nbsp; This is why God's Word advises us to: "&lt;i&gt;Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it&lt;/i&gt;"&lt;i&gt; (&lt;/i&gt;Proverbs 4:23, &lt;span style="font-size: x-small;"&gt;NIV&lt;/span&gt;)!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My grandmother used to pray, "God, put a hot coal of fire on my tongue." I know exactly what she meant -&amp;nbsp; "God, sear those words before they leave my mouth and hurt someone!"&amp;nbsp; As a preacher, I speak for a living and if I am going to represent Jesus accurately and preach His Word with integrity, I must guard my heart from the things that taint and corrupt.&amp;nbsp; I must fill the heart treasury with "good things" that will nourish and bless others.&amp;nbsp; This doesn't just happen on Saturday nights - before I preach on Sunday morning, it is an investment that must occur all week long!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you willing to ask God to do an audit of your treasury and pray this with me today?&lt;br /&gt;"Heavenly Father, we pray like the Psalmist - '&lt;i&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-16263"&gt;23&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. &lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-16264"&gt;24&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;/span&gt;See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting&lt;/i&gt;'  (Psalm 139:23-24). I want to be a tree that produces good fruit - the fruit of Your Spirit. Let my words nurture and build up those that You have placed in my life. Jesus put it this way: &lt;b&gt;"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed"&lt;/b&gt; (John 8:36).&amp;nbsp; Free indeed.&amp;nbsp; But (yes, there's that infamous qualifier) the challenge is to stay free, isn't it?&amp;nbsp; I believe that the key is found in 2 Corinthians 3:17 - &lt;b&gt;"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."&lt;/b&gt;&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Holy Spirit helps us to maintain our freedom.&amp;nbsp; He is our Helper. He convicts us of sin and leads us into all truth.&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;The Holy Spirit can help keep us from returning to Egypt - back into the slavery of sin.&amp;nbsp; Listen for God's voice and trust His guidance. Therefore, you must be holy because I am holy"&lt;/i&gt; (Lev. 11:45).&amp;nbsp; Now read Peter's instructions in his letter to believers living in a pagan culture:&amp;nbsp; &lt;i&gt;"Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy'"&lt;/i&gt; (1 Peter 1:13-16, NASB).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Peter is quoting from this same passage in Leviticus.&amp;nbsp; So, this call from God, the call to the higher standard of holiness, doesn't just involve Old Testament prohibitions; it is part of the new covenant for every follower of Christ!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is important to note that, according to Peter's instructions, holiness begins by preparing your mind for action.&amp;nbsp; This implies that there will be constant warfare (action) to stay holy in an ungodly world.&amp;nbsp; You don't have to be internet or media savvy in order to know that we are under a constant barrage of unholy thoughts, philosophies and images.&amp;nbsp; The internet alone is representative of the battle. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers (2 Corinthians 4:4), but that is not true for the follower of Christ and remaining holy means winning the battle for the mind.&amp;nbsp; I like the way the New Living translates Peter's instruction: &lt;i&gt;"think clearly."&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp; This is the challenge for every believer in a world that is emphatically anti-Christ in it's orientation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Secondly, Peter instructs us to &lt;i&gt;"keep sober in spirit."&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp; Another translation simply says, &lt;i&gt;"exercise self-control"&lt;/i&gt; (NLT).&amp;nbsp; This is where the battle is often won or lost.&amp;nbsp; I'm not a big fan of self-control.&amp;nbsp; Probably because it means...well, controlling my "self."&amp;nbsp; We can be driven by our selfish desires and impulses, but God doesn't leave us at the mercy of every selfish whim.&amp;nbsp; Check out Paul's instruction to Timothy:&amp;nbsp; &lt;i&gt;"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline." &lt;/i&gt;(2 Timothy 1:7, NIV).&amp;nbsp; God's Word makes it clear that this is an essential out-growth of the believer's life.&amp;nbsp; &lt;i&gt;But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;(Galatians 5:22-23).&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/i&gt; Yep, there it is - self-control - anchoring those other eight fruit of the Spirit.&amp;nbsp; Oh, and while we're there, let's not miss out on verse 24:&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp; "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;'Nuff said?&lt;i&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lastly, God's Word reminds us of the grace that will come with Christ's return.&amp;nbsp; Wait, not judgment?&amp;nbsp; Look at it again: &lt;i&gt;"...fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ".&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;Whoa.&amp;nbsp; I was worried because the more I think about this, the more I realize that there's no way I can &lt;b&gt;always &lt;/b&gt;be &lt;b&gt; &lt;/b&gt;holy. Wait! Let's be clear here:&amp;nbsp; I'm not talking cheap grace - where I'm using God's grace as a doormat to wipe my dirty, unholy feet (as an opportunity to sin).&lt;i&gt; &lt;/i&gt;The fact of the matter is that if I put my hope in my efforts to remain always holy, I'm in serious trouble and it can easily be reduced to the "outward" standards of holiness that mark those who follow that prescription.&amp;nbsp; There is a dimension of grace here that should not be ignored!&amp;nbsp; As a fallen man living in a fallen world, my struggle to remain "holy to the Lord" is often marked by epic failures.&amp;nbsp; Without God's grace, holiness is a hopeless endeavor.&amp;nbsp; Thank God for the vital, life-changing reminder of His grace!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wow.&amp;nbsp; I didn't intend to go this far into this subject of holiness; but as you can tell, it's HUGE and not easily addressed.&amp;nbsp; Simply from a vocational perspective, there is ALWAYS tension here for the minister/pastor.&amp;nbsp; Being holy and being human can feel mutually exclusive, but God doesn't call us to an impossible standard or an unrealistic lifestyle.&amp;nbsp; This is not an exhaustive treatment, but simply drawing from one Scripture passage to give us further insight in what it means to be a holy people.&amp;nbsp; So to put a bow on it:&amp;nbsp; we are made holy, not just by our relationship to a holy God, but we remain holy by living a set-apart lifestyle - obedient to God's Word and resisting the constant current of our culture that tries to carry us away from Him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;"So roll up your sleeves, put your mind in gear, be totally ready to  receive the gift that's coming when Jesus arrives. Don't lazily slip  back into those old grooves of evil, doing just what you feel like  doing. You didn't know any better then; you do now. As obedient  children, let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God's  life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness. So gentle reader, read on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Moses' story captures my imagination and resonates with me in many ways.&amp;nbsp; I was reading Exodus 4 when several thoughts occurred to me....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TUFeF-RiJ8I/AAAAAAAAADQ/0XWkSNXXPWY/s1600/no-excuses.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TUFeF-RiJ8I/AAAAAAAAADQ/0XWkSNXXPWY/s200/no-excuses.gif" width="200" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;Over the centuries, I wonder how many believers have prayed Moses'  prayer: &lt;b&gt;“Lord, please! Send anyone else”&lt;/b&gt; (Ex 4:13). You won't find many  books written about this prayer (see Jabez, the Psalms &amp;amp; the Lord's  Prayer). Excuse follows excuse, but God persists. Aren't you glad for  that?!!? God doesn't give up so easily on us (at least not like we give up  on Him) and He doesn't answer Moses' prayer (at least not like Moses  wanted Him to).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you've been offering Him excuses, it's time to offer  Him your life. Listen to the prophet Isaiah's response to God's query: &lt;b&gt;Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;b&gt;Send &lt;/b&gt;&lt;b&gt;me!”&lt;/b&gt; (Isaiah 6:8) If God has come calling, why don't you pray that prayer right now?&amp;nbsp; Let's see what God can do with one life surrendered to  His will. (Read the rest of Moses' story as a living example.) God persists because His plan is best - for us and for those  who will follow us!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lagniappe: When Moses approaches the burning bush, he carries a common  shepherd's staff (Ex. 4:2, 4).  When he returns to Egypt, he carries  "&lt;b&gt;the staff of God&lt;/b&gt;" (4:20). The  Israelites left their homes in Canaan to escape the famine (during the  days of Jacob &amp;amp; Joseph) and now 400 years later they have become  slaves in the land of their original rescue.  The relatively small  family of Jacob has become the captive nation of Israel (over 2 million  strong).  Cut to Moses:&amp;nbsp; He is 40 years old when he runs away to Midian. Forty years  later, he meets God at the burning bush on Mount Sinai.  Add all of this together and  you get verse 25 - &lt;b&gt;"He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it  was time to act." &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TUBmyj--VEI/AAAAAAAAADM/Pzb-MKZeX9Q/s1600/moses+%2526+burning+bush.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TUBmyj--VEI/AAAAAAAAADM/Pzb-MKZeX9Q/s320/moses+%2526+burning+bush.jpg" width="248" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Think about it: after 40 years of exile and at 80 years old, from the  palace to the paddock, from son of Pharaoh to son-in-law of a rural priest,  (oh yeah, and don't forget the reason that Moses was in exile was because he murdered someone!); at just the right  time, God sends Moses to deliver Israel.  Moses goes from being drawn  out of the water to being called out by God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How important is this for you and me?  God is watching over us.  He  knows our past - our flaws and our worst failures.  God didn't dismiss Moses' past, He used it to mold him into a man that  he could use.&amp;nbsp; He is aware of our present situation.&amp;nbsp; Those 40 years caring for someone else's sheep?&amp;nbsp; Not  wasted at all!&amp;nbsp; God knows our future.&amp;nbsp; Think about it this way: what God did in Moses affected the whole nation of Israel.&amp;nbsp; What  God is doing in your life?&amp;nbsp; Only He knows the impact it will have on others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was a promise to Israel, but it certainly has personal application:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-19647"&gt;1&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-19647"&gt;1&lt;/sup&gt; For I know the plans I  have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm  you, plans to give you hope and a future. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-19648"&gt;12&lt;/sup&gt; Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-19649"&gt;13&lt;/sup&gt; You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-19650"&gt;14&lt;/sup&gt; I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity. Will you trust Him?&amp;nbsp; Even if you feel like a failure?&amp;nbsp; Even if you feel like you've been exiled to the desert for 40 years?&amp;nbsp; He will deliver  on His promises. (Did you hear the indignation in that exclamation?)&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I was standing at the counter of the bank this morning, trying to remember what instructions she had given me.&amp;nbsp; I know she said something, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember what it was!&amp;nbsp; The teller was being super patient, but for the life of me, I was drawing a blank.&amp;nbsp; And the worst part, if I couldn't come through and remember this, it would just be further proof for Gina that I do have ADD issues.&amp;nbsp; ugh!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've read it several times now in my Bible.&amp;nbsp; It's in at least three of the Gospels and Jesus repeats it in His address to the seven churches of Revelation.&amp;nbsp; On several occasions, Matthew records this important admonition from  Jesus, &lt;i&gt;"Whoever has ears, let them hear”&lt;/i&gt; (11:15; 13:9, 43). It's as if He is telling the crowds (and His disciples) to, "Listen up!&amp;nbsp; Pay attention now, because what I'm about to say could change your life forever...."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a preacher and teacher, I can tell you that there have been many times over the years that I've implored those gathered to, "Pay attention and listen up!"&amp;nbsp; (I've even been known to wake up an occasional sleeper.)&amp;nbsp; Sometimes you just get a sense that the crowd is zoning out or that they're distracted by something going on around them.&amp;nbsp; That's what is comforting to me about Jesus' admonition to His congregations!&amp;nbsp; They ALWAYS paid attention to Him, right?&amp;nbsp; He never had to deal with people who just didn't seem to be getting it. I'm not so sure...even His disciples didn't get it at times! &amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I believe that there are several key components to "hearing" what the Spirit is saying through a sermon or teaching or in our prayer time:&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TT28TkUN-8I/AAAAAAAAADI/4m1bQFqvx9A/s1600/ear_drawing_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TT28TkUN-8I/AAAAAAAAADI/4m1bQFqvx9A/s320/ear_drawing_1.jpg" width="229" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;Listening&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;: This part is not always as easy as we  think. We battle constant distractions, not to mention our spiritual ADD.&amp;nbsp; There will always be a supernatural element to this battle because the devil doesn't want you to hear the Truth; so he will do all that he can to distract you from it.&amp;nbsp; Listening is a discipline and it requires concentration.&amp;nbsp; We have come to believe that multi-tasking is a necessary skill in our world today.&amp;nbsp; We even believe that we are being productive when we juggle several things that need our focus and attention. But multi-tasking can prevent us from hearing &lt;u&gt;&lt;b&gt;all &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/u&gt;that God wants to say!&amp;nbsp; What Truth have we missed out on, because we feed our ADD with the erroneous belief that this is somehow more spiritually productive.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;Understanding&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;: This is the ability to process what we've heard.&amp;nbsp; Again, a supernatural component is at work, especially when we need discernment.&amp;nbsp; Discernment is the ability to know good from bad, right from wrong, or truth from error.&amp;nbsp; The psalmist prayed this way:&amp;nbsp; &lt;i&gt;"I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes"&lt;/i&gt; (Psalm 119:125).&amp;nbsp; And if we don't understand, we need to follow the the disciples' example  and ask!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;Application&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;: God will give us the insight that we need, so that we can  apply the instruction through our obedient response. This isn't just  about "hearing" the message, it is about how we process and respond to  what you've heard! That's why God speaks so pointedly through the  apostle James: &lt;i&gt;"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive  yourselves. Do what it says"&lt;/i&gt; (James 1:22). Listen to Jesus' instruction:&amp;nbsp; &lt;i&gt;"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine &lt;u&gt;&lt;b&gt;and&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/i&gt; &lt;i&gt;puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;Our response is the critical component to "hearing" what the Spirit is saying!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;i&gt;"Whoever has ears, let him hear."&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp; I believe that this ancient admonition is "active" - in other words, the Spirit of the Lord continues to call us to "listen up". &amp;nbsp; Whether you are reading the Bible, in a time of prayer and intercession, or sitting under someone's ministry in the Word, we still need to hear what God is saying to us today. "Paying" attention will cost you.&amp;nbsp; And the return on your investment?&amp;nbsp; Check out what God's Word promises:&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;span class="passageBody_normalsize" id="ctl00_PlaceHolderMain_ucDailyReadingControl_rptPassages_ctl03_lblPassageBody"&gt;&lt;div class="poet1-vn-sp"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;&lt;span class="vn"&gt;20&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;My child, pay attention to what I say.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="poet2"&gt;Listen carefully to my words.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="poet1-vn"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;&lt;span class="vn"&gt;21&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;Don’t lose sight of them.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="poet2"&gt;Let them penetrate deep into your heart,&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="poet1-vn"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;&lt;span class="vn"&gt;22&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;for they bring life to those who find them,&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="poet2"&gt;and healing to their whole body.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;Give God your undivided attention today as you listen, understand, and apply His Word to your life!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. I am amazed again by the first story in this chapter.  The characters and subplots in this short  account are fascinating to me - the leper, the crowd, the Law, and of  course, Jesus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Think about it:  The leper "suddenly" approached Jesus.  A casual  reading will miss this important detail.  By Jewish law, lepers were to  live separated from their families.  Some historians note that a leper  had to shout "unclean" as someone approached them on the road.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Imagine  having to constantly identify yourself as a pariah. Imagine the  feelings of one who had been banished from their community.  Imagine this wasting disease eating away at your body.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Imagine  hearing that there was a teacher that was healing people with terrible afflictions. Imagine the wonderful hope - the possibility - that Jesus could heal and change everything for an outcast.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In desperation, the leper  rushes toward the Master. (I'm pretty sure the crowd parted like the Red Sea as  the he kneels before Jesus.) He doesn't wonder "if" Jesus can heal, just if He was willing. It appears that the only doubt is whether Jesus would receive him or recoil and rebuke.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ignoring the obvious offense, Jesus  reaches out and TOUCHES him!  I can hear people in the crowd as they  draw back, but strain to see: "Hey, that's against the law!  Eeewwww!   What is he thinking?!!?  How dare...!  Look, the leprosy is...GONE!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What faith the leper had - certain that Jesus could, but uncertain if He  was willing. What relief to hear those words - "I am willing, be  healed!"  What rejoicing to be healed - completely cleansed - from this  dread disease!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the best part for you and me?  This is the same Savior that we serve today.&amp;nbsp; He is still the Healer!&amp;nbsp; In verse 17, Matthew quotes from Isaiah 53:4 - "Surely He has borne our  griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows  and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken,  smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy]." And we won't dismiss the wonderful  promise of Hebrews 13:8 - "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today  and forever." And in spite of some flawed individuals and some very sordid and scandalous situations, God's plans prevail. Believers who are trusting the One who is gracious and merciful and whose promises and commandments are completely trustworthy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;By faith, they trusted God's promises.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;By faith, they refused to compromise with sin.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;By faith, they kept right on going, in spite of setbacks and disappointments.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;What would your testimony, your statement of faith, sound like today?&amp;nbsp; Try it.&amp;nbsp; Think about your life, the past and recent events, and fill in the blank - "By faith..."&amp;nbsp; If you're having a hard time, it may be an indicator that you've been trusting your own way.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;I have a close “friend” who has a serious problem.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Family members have pled with him.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Friends have tried to reason with him.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I hear an intervention is in the works.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;He is addicted…to potato chips.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Regardless of the flavor, at any time of day or night, he is tempted by the craving for salty goodness.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Ok, I confess - it’s me.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I love ‘em and I am passionate about the crunch of a good potato chip.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I’m not an expert, but I am something of a chip connoisseur.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I’ve tried hundreds of different kinds.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I’m not often tempted by sweets.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Cookies and ice cream are great, but give me a bag of chips and a big glass of Coke and I’m in snack heaven!&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Hmmm, wait here a minute… *&lt;b&gt;munch, munch&lt;/b&gt;*&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Ah, much better!&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Needed a little pick-me-up in order to finish this blog. &lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;Where was I going with this?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Oh, yeah – self-control.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;If you’ve exhibited some self-control and you’re still reading this, you can probably relate to my struggles.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;After all, this is common to man.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;We all wrestle with &lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;our “self” and it’s incessant cravings and desires.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Now don’t worry, I’m not going to start listing all of the issues that we have with self-control.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;They are too many to count, right?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I’m no expert on this subject either.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;In fact, as my opening thoughts reveal, I’m more qualified to speak to the LACK OF!&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; (Side Note:&amp;nbsp; I didn't want to title this particular blog "Self-Control" because I was fairly certain, you wouldn't read it. I mean, who wants to be reminded of the nastiest enemy and the biggest problem in our lives?&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;I tried a couple of cute and clever titles, but just decided to call it as the Scripture sees it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;) &lt;/span&gt;The Proverb that prompted this diatribe really got to me this morning.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Look at it again: &lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;b&gt;"A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.”&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;What does that mean?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;How is this illustrated in our lives?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;The consequences of our loss of self-control are well-documented.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;From bloated bodies to broken marriages, we’re witness to what happens when the walls are broken down.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;How can we restore the broken walls?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Is there a proven strategy for the warfare between flesh and spirit?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;What will it take to gain some measure of self-control in our lives?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;This is what I know from Scripture – when we surrendered our lives to Jesus and decided to follow Him, His Spirit takes up residence in our hearts (John 14:16-20).&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Paul tells young Timothy, &lt;b&gt;“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline”&lt;/b&gt; (2 Timothy 1:7). &lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;Ok, I may have just lost a few of you right there.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Why?&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Face it, we don’t like self-discipline.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TMB0kzJ5TEI/AAAAAAAAAC0/4nqFsH7Ya2o/s1600/potato_chips.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="133" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TMB0kzJ5TEI/AAAAAAAAAC0/4nqFsH7Ya2o/s200/potato_chips.jpg" width="200" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;I can hear you now - “Hey, I’m just not good at reining in my desires. I’ve tried to curtail the flesh, but it just has it’s way. Cutting back just isn’t in my skill set!”&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;But self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-24).&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;While there are consequences for the lack of self-control, there are blessings and benefits that come with the fruit of self-control.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Take a moment to consider how you would benefit and how those around you would be blessed when this fruit grows in abundance in your life.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;It is the Holy Spirit that nurtures and helps us to produce this wonderful fruit!&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;While we have the Holy Spirit’s help, we also have a joint responsibility in this issue. &lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;Some effort is required on our part!&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;So, whether it’s too much TV, a lack of motivation, getting mad, or the urge for more munchies - take control, be prepared to tell your selfish desires, “NO!”&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to cultivate and help you produce this wonderful (and beneficial) fruit.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;I have often told my congregation that the fruit of the Spirit is not for our consumption!&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;After all, while we certainly enjoy the benefits, those within the periphery (the walls) of our lives - our loved ones, our friends, even strangers that we come into contact with - all benefit, and are blessed, by our self-control.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;b&gt;"Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: 'If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.' "&lt;/b&gt; - Mark 8:34&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;P.S. The Recabites also helped in the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls in Nehemiah 3:14-15. The Recabites are living examples of those who refused to be changed by the culture around them.&amp;nbsp; They would not drink wine and refused to build houses or plant crops or vineyards. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I read this passage, I was reminded of the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11.&amp;nbsp; They are described this way:&amp;nbsp; &lt;b&gt;&lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-30170"&gt;13&lt;/sup&gt;All these people were  still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things  promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they  admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-30171"&gt;14&lt;/sup&gt;People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-30172"&gt;15&lt;/sup&gt;If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. &lt;sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-30173"&gt;16&lt;/sup&gt;Instead,  they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is  not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for  them. &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember the day in which the Recabites lived...&amp;nbsp; Surrounded by idolaters and probably ridiculed for their backward views, they resisted the pressure to conform and compromise. At work?&amp;nbsp; Ok, sorry. I didn't mean to get too personal there.&amp;nbsp; But by your reaction, I'd say you've got more than a few.&amp;nbsp; Some of the projects just lack a little bit of caulk.&amp;nbsp; Or maybe just one more coat of paint.&amp;nbsp; Perhaps things have fallen into such disrepair that you've got to start all over again.&amp;nbsp; Now, that is disheartening. And yes, I'm with you on this one.&amp;nbsp; When I first asked the question, I thought I was on some moral high ground, but a walk through the house or a look at my desk (let's not go through the drawers!) quickly reveals my procrastination, my busyness, or my ADD (Gina wanted to add that!).&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's worth considering why we don't finish what we start.&amp;nbsp; Busyness has to be at the top of the list.&amp;nbsp; But it's also underestimating the scope of the project or it could be overestimating my ability to do the work required.&amp;nbsp; Sometimes its a financial issue - we just didn't count the cost.&amp;nbsp; At other times, it is just plain laziness.&amp;nbsp; It can even be my drive for perfection (let's not go there).&amp;nbsp; Maybe we justify and reason our way to believing that what we've done is adequate and that piece of trim or the extra coat of paint really isn't needed.&amp;nbsp; "It looks fiiiine, Gina...really!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know, I've meddled enough.&amp;nbsp; My point?&amp;nbsp; Other than heaping on an extra load of guilt and condemnation?&amp;nbsp; Aren't you glad that God not only continues His work within us, but He is faithful to complete it.&amp;nbsp; Knowing that He is that committed to my development and growth, encourages me!&amp;nbsp; I often tell my congregation that God will not abandon the work of His hands.&amp;nbsp; And YOU are the work of His hands!&amp;nbsp; His work in our lives won't be complete until Jesus comes back.&amp;nbsp; In the meantime, we can count on Him to keep up His good work in us.&amp;nbsp; And yes, some of us need more work than others!&amp;nbsp; (I'm a full-time project for God - just ask my wife!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One more thin&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;g - you ma&lt;/span&gt;y discover, like one author, that God has grander plans than you could ever have imagined. Listen to his testimony:&amp;nbsp; &lt;span style="font-family: Georgia,&amp;quot;Times New Roman&amp;quot;,serif; font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;i&gt;“When I invited Jesus into my life, I thought he was going to put up some wallpaper and hang a few pictures.&amp;nbsp; But he started knocking out walls and adding on rooms.&amp;nbsp; I said, ‘I was expecting a nice cottage.’ But he said, ‘I’m making a palace in which to live.’ “&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, be encouraged today.&amp;nbsp; You might believe that God has given up on you, but He is fully committed to seeing it through!&amp;nbsp; Continue to submit your life to His work. God's battle plan for the a vast army arrayed against His people can be found in 2 Chronicles 20:17 - &lt;i&gt;"You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you."&amp;nbsp; &lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you're going through a difficult time, facing the unknown and uncertain about your future - trust God. The antidote for worry is truth!&amp;nbsp; Stand firm on His promises. Declare them to your feelings and shout them to your enemies! Obey His directives.&amp;nbsp; You can't go wrong following His advice.&amp;nbsp; Listen again to His admonition:&lt;i&gt; "If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all”&lt;/i&gt; (NIV).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stand firm, in spite of what you may feel, see, or hear!&amp;nbsp; Pray right now for the peace and the assurance that you need, so that you will weather the storm and be victorious in the battle. (And "discipline" is an appropriate description!)&amp;nbsp; God's instruction is pointed - right down to the exclamation mark.&amp;nbsp; In our packed schedules, and in our manic busyness, we must learn to quiet our soul, to settle our thoughts, and to unplug our lives from all of the external stimulants.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some time ago, Gina and I had the opportunity to escape for a few days to a quiet, and very secluded, cabin in southern Indiana.&amp;nbsp; Cell phone reception is spotty at best and there is certainly no wi-fi capability.&amp;nbsp; (Yes, there is a small TV, but no cable.)&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One afternoon, by a stroke of good luck, I managed to get one bar on my phone and decided to post something witty and engaging on Facebook.&amp;nbsp; A friend replied, "Dude. UNPLUG!"&amp;nbsp; And he was right!&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;Instead of enjoying the very thing that I needed (peace &amp;amp; quiet) and craved (time alone with my wife), I was inviting disruptions into our sanctuary of solitude.&amp;nbsp; God may as well have said to me, "BE STILL!&amp;nbsp; CEASE &amp;amp; DESIST!"&amp;nbsp; My friend was absolutely right.&amp;nbsp; I needed to unplug and enjoy the peace and quiet, with God and with my wife.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line: busyness is habit-forming.&amp;nbsp; And dare I say, addictive.&amp;nbsp; (I can't go into all of the reasons why, but it is worth considering, so spend some time thinking on this!)&amp;nbsp; We seemingly can't live without auditory and visual stimulation.&amp;nbsp; We want to stay plugged in 24/7.&amp;nbsp; The question is: What have we missed from God, because of our stubborn refusal to unplug, disengage, and still our hurried soul?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Silence.&amp;nbsp; Peace. Quiet.&amp;nbsp; Be still.&amp;nbsp; Take the time to create a sanctuary for your soul.&amp;nbsp; God wants to speak to you.&amp;nbsp; And remember that it is often in that "still, small voice" (1 Kings 19:11-13).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you ready to put yourself in a place where you can experience God in a more intimate way?&amp;nbsp; Where you can "know" Him?&amp;nbsp; God wants to speak, and reveal Himself, to us.&amp;nbsp; And I am certain that His desire is much greater than our desire to hear from Him.&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My advice today: unplug and listen closely. Stand firm in the  faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love"&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt; (1 Cor.  16:13-14).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I started to write the word "&lt;i&gt;advice&lt;/i&gt;" for the modern  believer, but I struck the word.  Advice implies that it is optional -  that you can take it or leave it.  But there is an emphatic impact in  these short bullet points of instruction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the day that we live (and I  believe that we are in "last days" ministry), these words can carry even  greater emphasis for the church.  The questions become:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;What do we need  to stand guard against?&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;How do we stand firm in our faith?&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Where do we  derive our courage and strength?&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;And the very personal evaluation that  reveals our true motives - "Am I doing this in love?"&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Our answers will  reveal whether or not we are obedient to God's directives.  So, this  isn't mere advice that we can be disregard. Don't give in to despair.&amp;nbsp; God has not abandoned the work of His hands.&amp;nbsp; And YOU are the work of His hands!&amp;nbsp; Trust. Wait. Listen. Go ahead and grieve.&amp;nbsp; Just don't lose sight of WHO is ultimately in control of your circumstances.&amp;nbsp; Don't forget WHO holds your life in His hands.&amp;nbsp; Don't give up on God's work. They wept because they heard God's Word understood it's meaning!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While this response was important, the leaders knew that it was equally important to remember the God who gave the Law and to recognize that He is &lt;i&gt;"a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love"&lt;/i&gt; (9:17).&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God takes great joy in His people. Any time that the church begins to grow and advance (even if its just a rebuilding phase), the enemy will do whatever he can to frustrate the work. It separates us from others and places them (and the thought of serving them) beneath us.&amp;nbsp; Pride deceives us into believing that we are better than we are.&amp;nbsp; It deceives us by making us think that&amp;nbsp; all that we are blessed with is the result of our own hard work or ingenuity. Sometimes we desire "new revelation" and ignore God's original revelation.  The Bible is still the most reliable source for us to get instruction and direction!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With this in mind, Psalm 19 gives us wonderful insight into the benefits of God's Word.  Check out what David writes and how it can affect our lives....&lt;br /&gt;• The instructions of the Lord are &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;perfect&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His decrees are &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;trustworthy&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His commandments are &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;right&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His commands are &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;clear&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His laws are &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;true&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His laws are&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt; more desirable than gold&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;sweeter than honey&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His laws are &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;a warning&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;a great reward&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the benefits?&lt;br /&gt;•  His instructions &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;revive the soul&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His decrees &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;make wise the simple&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His commandments &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;bring joy to the heart&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His commands &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;give insight for living&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;•  His law &lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;is a great reward for those who obey them&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TE27pa58AXI/AAAAAAAAABo/UgAG7dGhLFo/s1600/Bible-Reading-Guy-782907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="191" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TE27pa58AXI/AAAAAAAAABo/UgAG7dGhLFo/s200/Bible-Reading-Guy-782907.jpg" width="200" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;In 27 years of ministry, I have noticed a definite decline in Bible knowledge.  The Old Testament stories that are so familiar to me, are virtually unknown to many.  I hear questions like: "That's really in the Bible?" or, worse yet, statements like, "I just don't have time to read my Bible!"  I don't believe that we are just talking about people who don't like to read.  Most church "experts" agree that biblical illiteracy is a serious problem in the Church today! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is time for us to treasure our time in God's Word.  It will nourish and sustain us. This is strategic  because the ark represented God's presence and blessing over Israel and over David's reign as king. In his  passion, David wants to restore the ark to it's proper place of  prominence. While his intentions are honorable, his plan is faulty. The  consequence of his carelessness?  Uzzah died.  David was angry, but he  is at fault for not consulting God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In today's passage, David  confesses, "&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;we failed to ask God how to move it [the ark] properly&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;" (1  Chronicles 15:13b).  I don't like to think of how many times I have also had  good intentions, only to have my plan fall apart or fizzle out.  I'm not sure  that anyone has ever been killed by my carelessness, but I know that  people have been hurt.  If only I had inquired of the Lord and been obedient to His instruction!  What damage  could have been avoided if I had just waited on God's advice and followed His lead.  I'm  reminded of a strong word of advice from Proverbs (it's repeated in two  passages - probably because we are so prone to this mistake!): "&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;There is  a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;"  (&lt;span style="font-size: x-small;"&gt;14:12 &amp;amp; 16:25&lt;/span&gt;).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TDy2zzuYURI/AAAAAAAAABY/Rc0jV2fqpQ0/s1600/Blueprints.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="228" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TDy2zzuYURI/AAAAAAAAABY/Rc0jV2fqpQ0/s320/Blueprints.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;At our church, we are coming up on a couple of milestones - our 30th  Anniversary and paying off our mortgage to become debt-free.&amp;nbsp; Our  leadership team has been meeting to discuss and plan for the future.&amp;nbsp; We  are in the process of developing a master plan that will outline ways  to make our facility more effective for ministry.&amp;nbsp; We don't believe that  God wants us going back into slavery (the Bible says that the borrower  is slave to the lender - Proverbs 22:7), so our planning is tempered by some  non-negotiable principles.&amp;nbsp; But the guiding principle throughout this  process is seeking the Master's Plan - going to God to discover His will  for our church.&amp;nbsp; Again, Solomon confirms this Psalm 127:1a - "&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;Unless  the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I've already attested, I've not always heeded this admonition.&amp;nbsp; I can  tell you, emphatically, that the greatest moments in my life, my most  successful accomplishments, and the sweetest victories have been because  I first inquired of the Lord and then followed His lead in obedience.&amp;nbsp;  And yes, the worst moments, the most miserable failures, and the times  of defeat can be attributed to my own carelessness and disobedience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The key (not just for those of us in leadership, but for every believer and follower of Christ) is to &lt;b&gt;ALWAYS&lt;/b&gt; go to God first.&amp;nbsp; Years ago, we would plan our Sunday services and the worship leader would include at the top of each agenda, "&lt;i&gt;As the Holy Spirit leads.&lt;/i&gt;"&amp;nbsp; Following His lead is critical to accomplishing His will in our lives and in our ministry.&amp;nbsp; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OZFeAPmllnM/TCn3GMjAsAI/AAAAAAAAABQ/jl4MnodKgKg/s320/Advice.jpg" width="240" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;We groan as the young King Rehoboam (son of wise King Solomon) rejects the advice of the older counselors (1 Kings 19) and instead, goes to his friends and sycophants for advice.&amp;nbsp; You know the outcome: Rehoboam takes the rash and arrogant advice of his contemporaries and loses most of the kingdom of Israel.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1 Kings 20, Jeroboam takes the advice of his counselors and leads Israel back into idol worship.&amp;nbsp; Note that Jeroboam makes TWO golden calves (possibly to trump Aaron's one golden calf), but uses the very same language from Aaron's idolatrous rant - &lt;i&gt;"Look, Israel, theses are the gods who brought you out of Egypt!"&lt;/i&gt; (v. 28).&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two groups of counselors who gave disastrous advice to two leaders at critical moments in Israel's &lt;br /&gt;history.&amp;nbsp; There is a very important lesson in this:&amp;nbsp; we must beware of who we seek advice from. (Acts 11:17).  I wonder how many times that I have stood in God's way?  I'm  certain it's too many to count.  Some of those obstructions come  easily to mind and I am shamed by my motivations.  The reasons?  Pride,  arrogance (wanted God's will my way), lack of faith, subtle prejudices,  tradition (that's the way we've always done it!), selfishness...ok, the  list is long and ugly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But what I'm wondering is how many times I have  gotten in God's way and didn't even know it.  Because I was just being  careless, because I was impatient over some minor inconvenience, or  because I felt hurt or slighted in some way. Scary when I begin to think  about it in this context.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The question is: how can I keep this from  happening again? Like Peter, I must listen to the Holy Spirit, trust  God's direction and plan, be obedient to His instruction (no matter what other people might say), and be willing  to be used in whatever way He sees fit.  I know, easier said than done. Especially when I felt that the  teacher was purposefully trying to trick me into giving the wrong  answer.  You know, the kind of teacher who asks the kind of questions that have a shade of truth in  them, but they're not quite right....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In life, times of testing will  come.  (And they often make us feel like we are going through the fire!) Ok, that's not comforting at all.&amp;nbsp; What is  reassuring about this truth is the One who is doing the testing.  We can  trust the Lord, for several reasons:  1) His love for us is not in  question. 2) The test will not be forever. 3) He wants us to pass the  test - not just with our faith intact, but with our faith in Him  stronger and better than before.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are going through a time of  testing, it is important to know WHO is giving the test and to know WHAT He  desires to do in you.  Read James 1:2-4 for further insight into God's  desire for your life. Jesus' response to the weeping of Mary and the mourners gathered there  is curious.  The Bible records that "...a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply  troubled" (v. 33), "Then Jesus wept" (v. 35), and then in verse 38 -  "Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb" (New Living Translation).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps this was not  just in response to their histrionics. (By comparison, we are MUCH more  reserved in our modern American grief than in the Middle East.)  I  believe that Jesus is grieved, and angered, by the their unbelief.  He  already knows the outcome of this event.  He wants them to &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;BELIEVE&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus reveals Himself, "I am the resurrection and the life" (v. 25) and then asks Martha, "&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Do you believe this?&lt;/span&gt;" (v. 25).  Martha affirmed - "&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;I have always believed &lt;/span&gt;you are the Messiah" (v. 27),  but her belief appears to be mere mental assent, not true faith in who Christ is AND in what He can do.   It then appears that Mary's grief has undermined her faith as well (v. 32).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus responded to Martha's sound reasoning for not opening the tomb, “Didn’t I tell  you that you would see God’s glory &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;if you believe&lt;/span&gt;? ...Father, thank you  for hearing me. You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake  of all these people standing here, &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;so that they will believe&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;you sent  me” (vv. 40-42).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How often have the emotions of my circumstances  prevented me from believing God's promises?  I know that God  does not want us to be emotionless faith automatons.  After all, He created our  emotional capabilities and Jesus shows emotion in this passage!  I do  believe that God wants me to move past my fear, grief, doubts,  anger, anxiety and worry, and to trust in Him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What I believe can supersede what I feel  to activate my faith in God!  This is not an easy activation, but like the father whose desperately  wanted his son healed, we can pray, "I &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;do  &lt;/span&gt;believe; &lt;b&gt;help&lt;/b&gt; &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;me &lt;/span&gt;overcome  my &lt;b&gt;unbelief&lt;/b&gt;!" As I read the passage, Jesus' words struck me again.  His  claims are not veiled or hidden.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A decision must be made about WHO  Jesus is.  C.S. Lewis called this the trilemma; and in his book,  &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Mere Christianity&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;,&lt;/span&gt; he makes this assertion: &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"A man who was merely a man  and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral  teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with a man who says  he is a poached egg - or he would be the devil of hell.  You must take  your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman  or something worse.You can shut Him up for a fool or you can fall at  His feet and call Him Lord and God.  But let us not come with any  patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not  left that open to us."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt; Thus, the trilemma - the decision that everyone  must make about who Jesus is.  He was either liar, lunatic, or He is  truly Lord.
